Chances are your animal's doctor might never tell you, but you'd want to know: Your veterinarian is one of a very small group of doctors who have earned the title "Diplomate" from the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP) for Canine and Feline Medicine and Surgery. "Diplomate" means the top level of education and expertise in veterinary medicine and surgery. In fact, your veterinarian is one of only 400 ABVP Diplomates in the United States and abroad.
What does that mean? It means your veterinarian made a choice to undergo a very long, very difficult process of additional studies and examination to become a board certified specialist. This process can take severeal years to complete and the motivation behind it is, very simply, excellence.
ABVP Diplomates have proven knowledge and expertise above and beyond what is required to practice veterinary medicine. Beyond that, they have earned the privilege to specialize in the treatment of one or more categories of animals.

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has recognized that there are veterinarians with advanced knowledge and training in certain areas that qualify them to be recognized as specialists, just as there are in human medicine.
One of the areas in which the AVMA has recognized veterinarians as specialists is in the area of Clinical Practice. The board certified specialist in Clinical Practice has demonstrated a broad base of knowledge and experience in all the areas that affect the health and proper care of their animal patients.
The organization recognized by the AVMA to test and certify veterinarians as specialists in Clinical Practice is the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP).
The certification process requires the candidate to present extensive credentials to the examining board of the ABVP even before qualifying for testing. There is a comprehensive examination process, which tests the veterinarian's knowledge of current methods of prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases in the canine & feline specialty area. The actual qualification and examination process requires several years to prepare for and pass the examination. Veterinarians who successfully complete the certifying procedure are called Board Certified Specialist for Canine and Feline Medicine and Surgery and Diplomates of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners.
